Three public transport units burn in Cancun over weekend

Cancun, Q.R. — Three public transport units belonging to different Cancun public transport companies were set on fire over the weekend. The incidences, which happened separately, were reported to authorities.

The first incident happened Saturday morning when a Maya Caribe bus was stopped in SM 65 waiting for passengers. While sitting idle with the door opened, an individual appeared and tossed a Molotove cocktail inside.

While those on the bus were able to get off unhurt, the entire driver’s area in the front of the bus was severely burned. The person who threw the cocktail fled and was not caught.

At 11:00 p.m. that same day, a Turicun public bus was set on fire in the northern portion of the city. The bus, which provided services along Ruta 44, was parked and empty for the day when it was set on fire.

The entire bus was engulfed in flames. It was exploding windows that finally caught the attention of nearby neighbors who alerted authorities.

On Sunday, a third public transport unit, this time a city collectivo, was burned. The unit was discovered completely gutted at Cuna Maya in SM 203 of the city. The driver was not on scene when police and firemen arrived and there was no official release on how the unit caught fire.

Motive for the attacks remain unknown. No arrests were made.
