Suspect demanding 800,000 in extortion payment captured in Cancun sting operation

Cancun, Q.R. — A suspect who made a request for an 800,000 peso extortion payment has been arrested in Cancun. Julio Alexi “N” was arrested in a sting operation after the extortion victim filed a complaint with local authorities.

According to the State Attorney General on February 26, Julio Alexi “N” went to a money exchange house located on Uxmal Avenue of Cancun where he requested the exchange of $20 USD.

After making the currency exchange, the now-detained is alleged to have handed the money exchange employee an envelope containing a telephone number that the manager was to answer.

“On February 28 of this year, the victim received a call to demand payment of “floor rights” in the amount of 800,000 pesos as a down payment and that the subsequent monthly payments would then be established,” the State Attorney said in a statement.

“Due to his probable participation in events that could constitute the crime of extortion to the detriment of two victims, the State Attorney General’s Office, through the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office in Combating the Crimes of Kidnapping and Extortion, arrested a male person in the streets of Cancun,” they added.

After constantly changing the delivery address, Julio Alexi “N” finally went to a point to collect the agreed amount, where he was secured by elements of the Investigative Police.
