State to start cleaning Cancun schools in preparation for August return to classes

Cancun, Q.R. — On Monday, the state will begin cleaning schools that have been closed due to the pandemic. Governor Carlos Joaquin says that they will begin with preschool, primary and secondary schools of Benito Juárez (Cancun), Felipe Carrillo Puerto and Othón P. Blanco.

His announcement comes during the same week as health undersecretary Hugo López-Gatel said that the education sector will be considered an essential activity. In turn, this means that the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) can call the return of face-to- face classes despite a red epidemiological light.

In a virtual meeting that make up the National Conference of Governors, López-Gatell highlighted that an adjustment will be made in the Official Gazette of the Federation for the education sector to be considered an essential activity.

This way, he says the return to face-to-face classes will not be subject to restrictions regardless of the color of the epidemiological light. His update comes after on July 20, López-Gatell said he presented an initiative to the National Health Council to modify the epidemiological light considerations.

His considerations included not having confinement or total closures of public places as well as the return of face-to-face classes. Last week, Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador declared that regardless of reasons, the return to face-to-face classes will take place at the end of August.

“We are going to restart classes. The new school year is going to start at the end of August. Rain, thunder, or lightning, we will not keep schools closed. Enough is enough.”

The school year will begin August 30. The return to classes will be voluntary.
