Cancun, Q.R. — A group of homeless people squatting in an abandoned house have been the said cause of a building fire. The old building in SM 69 was gutted Sunday due to a bonfire they lite inside.

According to available information, their bonfire became out of control, igniting left-behind furniture inside that quickly spread to the rest of the building.

Cancun firefighters were sent to the José López Portillo Avenue location Sunday morning around 10:00 a.m. after reports of the fire. There, firemen suffocated flames, but not before they damaged a set of overhead power lines.

The entire neighborhood was left without electricity after flames from the building reached the overhead CFE cables, melting them. CFE personnel were called in to repair the damage.
