Cancun, Q.R. — Excessive speed and lack of caution are being blamed for a single-vehicle accident that took out a Cancun street pole and created traffic chaos Tuesday.
Police say the accident happened at 10:00 p.m. at a roundabout near Colonia Campestre on avenida Luis Donaldo Colosio when witnesses reported seeing the Toyota speeding along the busy roadway.
According to preliminary information, the driver lost control and hit a traffic light pole. The impact caused vehicle to tip over on the road, causing a traffic jam. Reports say the 48-year-old driver, Luis Manuel Díaz, was speeding in the Toyota Sienna when he lost control at the roundabout and toppled the minivan.
The driver and his passenger were injured in the accident. Both attempted to leave the scene, however, witnesses called authorities. Paramedics arrived and transported both to hospital.
