Sparking CFE transformer causes brush fire in residential Cancun

Cancun, Q.R. — A transformer explosion at the top of a power pole sparked a brush fire near SM 510 of Cancun Wednesday night. The transformer was seen sparking on top of a CFE (Federal electricity Commission) pole before quickly catching fire.

Within a few minutes, the entire top of the pole was fully engulfed in flames that began dropping to the ground below. Dry vegetation surrounding the burning pole also quickly caught fire.

Residents alerted emergency services to the fire and subsequent loss of electricity. Hundreds of Cancun residents were without power Wednesday night due to the explosion.

Cancun firemen arrived at the intersection of Chacmol Avenue and 51st Street where residents reported the brush fire. The fast moving flames consumed at least one pole and several overhead power lines before it was finally extinguished.

The area was cordoned off as a precaution while crews worked to cool the affected area and prevent the fire from reigniting. No injuries were reported only CFE (Comisión Federal de Electricidad) property damage and power outages.

At least one pole and a set of overhead lines were damaged from the fire February 25, 2026.

According to neighbors, they heard a loud pop then saw smoke and then flames coming from the site of the transformer. Area residents were left without electricity for several hours while CFE crews made the necessary repairs.
