SICT plans 770 meter long interchange to relieve traffic at Nichupte bridge on Kukulkán Boulevard

Cancun, Q.R. — The Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) has submitted for approval to build an interchange. They are requesting permission for the construction of a vehicle overpass on Kukulkán Boulevard.

The objective of this project, their document reads, is to contribute to the improved flow of traffic at the intersection of the Nichupte Vehicular Bridge and Kukulkan Boulevard.

The benefits of this project include increased operating speeds and reduced vehicle operating costs for all users and enhanced comfort and safety for users along the highway, thanks to more traffic lanes and an improved road surface.

The overpass would also provide greater safety for users traveling through the interchange, more efficient commercial and industrial transport services in the area and reduce levels of pollution from gas emissions and noise by facilitating smoother and faster traffic flow.

Therefore, it is asserted that this project will substantially improve the level of service offered to local users and those traveling along the route, providing better road interconnection and more efficient communication in the area.

The SICT (Secretaría de Infraestructura, Comunicaciones y Transportes) submitted their Environmental Impact Statement (MIA) on January 16, 2025. They are looking to build the Kukulkán Road Distributor at Km 13+500 of the Cancún – Tulum highway.

In their MIA (Manifestación de Impacto Ambiental) they said the Kukulkán Interchange consists of a vehicular overpass on Boulevard Kukulkán at kilometer 13+500 (intersection with the Nichupté Vehicular Bridge).

The structure will have two ramps. Those for axes 100 and 200 will be the main ramps, while axes 60, 70, and 80 will connect to the PVN (National Interchange).

Construction work on the Kukulkán Interchange will be carried out within the existing rights-of-way, axes 100, 200, and 80 over Boulevard Kukulkán, and axes 60 and 70 part of the former and part of the right-of-way of the Nichupté Vehicular Bridge.

The Kukulkán Interchange consists of a 770 meter-long vehicular overpass (including the beginning and end access ramps). The structure will have two ramps and four lanes of 3.2 meters wide each with a central median.

The overpass will connect to the Nichupte Vehicular Bridge to enter and exit it toward Boulevard Kukulkán. The objective of the project is to contribute to the improved functioning of vehicular flow at the point of connection of the Nichupte Vehicular Bridge and Boulevard Kukulkán.
