Second Cancun Transit officer arrested for extortion of Italian tourist

Cancun, Q.R. — Another now-former Cancun Transit officer has been arrested for his participation in the extortion of an Italian tourist. The 41 year old former officer is facing charges for his alleged participation in the extortion of the male tourist in March of this year.

Daniel Omar “N” is the second officer of three alleged involved to be arrested. In March of 2025, a man and his girlfriend were stopped by Cancun Transit officers while driving in the city center.

Once stopped, the officers are alleged to have given the male driver a choice of a payment or arrest on allegations of a traffic violation. The tourist, identified as Andrea “N”, paid the money on a credit card which came to nearly 50,000 pesos at the then-exchange rate.

Upon return to his home country, he filed a legal complaint against the officers with the help of the Italian Consulate.

The second arrest in the March extortion case was announced Monday by the State Attorney General Raciel López Salazar. In May, now-former officer Ricardo “N” was arrested for his alleged involvement in the same extortion case. Local authorities continue their search for the third officer involved.
