Team to resume search for Cancun teen swept out to sea

Cancun, Q.R. — Search and rescue authorities came up empty handed Tuesday night after responding to the report of a teen being swept away. After hours of searching, there was no sign of the missing 17-year-old man who was reportedly swept out to sea by currents at Playa Gaviota Azul.

Firemen and elements of Civil Protection were quick to respond to the call at Kilometer 9.5 of the Cancun Hotel Zone, however, the lack of light combined with the abundance of sargassum hampered their search and rescue efforts.

After several hours of searching, there was no sign of the missing teen. Red flags have been placed along Cancun beaches due to the strong currents. The teen, who is a local from Cancun, was visiting the beach with his mother and sibling when the accident happened. They saw him struggling in the water and being pulled out to sea when they called emergency services.

A search team was at the beach until 9:30 p.m. Rescuers will continue their search and recovery efforts Wednesday.
