Cancun, Q.R. — Authorities are beginning the search Monday for an American swimmer who reportedly went missing Sunday night. Police were at the shores of a very windy Playa Chac Mool around 7:30 p.m. in response to a missing man.

Police were called to the beach at kilometer 10 of the Cancun Hotel Zone after witnesses said they saw the pair swept out to sea. Their cries for help from the man and woman were heard by people on the beach who rushed into the sea to save them.
The 28 year old Mexican woman was pulled from the water unconscious and rushed to hospital by ambulance, however, during their search, the American man was not located.

Authorities arrived and started to search but were unable to continue due to a lack of light and strong sea swells. At least four lifeguards were part of the Sunday evening search along with the Coast Guard. The search was called off at 9:30 p.m. due to the strong winds and darkness.

“The sea is very choppy which makes it impossible for us to work. As much as we would like to, it is impossible to take such a risk. The only thing we can do at the moment is to make combing brigades along the shore, waiting for the swimmer to appear. There is a Coast Guard vessel watching and waiting to find something, but due to the conditions, it is very difficult to work, ” said Cancun lifeguard Alex “N”.
Civil Protection and maritime rescue personnel resumed an active recovery operation Monday morning.
