Cancun, Q.R. — UPDATED: A tourist who was reported missing in the Cancun Hotel Zone has been found, while the captain of the vessel remains missing. The Secretary of Public Security of Quintana Roo made the announcement Monday when they discovered in boat the mangroves of the Nichupté Lagoon.
Reports said the man had rented a small tour boat, and that they got lost in the mangrove system. A report was made after he made contact via phone, requesting help. From there, a land and air search and rescue mission was implemented.
The boat was discovered a short time later in a mangrove of the lagoon system around 5:00 p.m. Monday with the tourist being reported in good health. Although there were no injuries, he was still provided with medical attention.
UPDATE: Head of Public Security, Alberto Capella, has verified that a tourist was found alive after a search effort to locate him in the lagoon system Monday, however, Capella has also said that the search continues for the captain of the small tour vessel.
As of 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, Cancun rescue teams continued to scour the area for the second person, the captain of the vessel. In his social media message, Capella says “We inform (you) that we continue working on the search for the captain of the ship reported missing in the Nichupté lagoon, the person located yesterday does not correspond to the captain. The tourist found alive is safe.” Initially, Capella had reported the two missing were tourists.
