The main suspect in the attack, a “direct relative”, has been arrested. Paramedics were called to the home in SM 234 just before 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. A man, woman and their two year old daughter were taken to hospital after being doused with a bottle of muriatic acid while they slept.

Police were able to locate the man accused of emptying the bottle of acid on the three family members. He has been identified as 21 year old Ángel Santiago “N”. In a statement from the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security, they said “the violent incident occurred while the victims, a man, his partner, and their two-year-old daughter, were sleeping.”

Police in Cancun said the attacker, a direct relative of the victims, entered the home and threw acid at them, causing first-degree burns. Personnel from the Specialized Group for Attention to Domestic Violence (GEAVIG) also provided psychological and legal support to the family. The detained man is reported to be the wife’s brother.

Police have not made any public comment on a motive for the attack that left all three with first degree skin burns.
