Police investigating deadly early morning shooting in central Cancun

Cancun, Q.R. — At least one person was killed in an early morning shooting in central Cancun Sunday. Police were at the scene at Plaza de Toros where the male driver of a white car was found dead.

The shooting happened in the plaza parking area off Bonampak Avenue shortly before daybreak. Forensic personnel were at the scene more than an hour collecting evidence.

The body of the deceased male, who has not been identified, was found laying outside his vehicle.

The deceased is reported to have been an active off-duty city police officer. He was in his personal vehicle when he became the target of an armed attack.

Local authorities have reported on the start of an investigation into what they say is aggravated homicide. Police in Cancun have intensified their presence in the area in an attempt to find those responsible.

Authorities have kept the name of the deceased confidential along with details surrounding the death of the man.

In a briefing early Sunday, the State Attorney General (FGE) said “the Quintana Roo Attorney General’s Office (FGE Quintana Roo) reports the opening of an investigation into the aggravated homicide of a male whose identity is being withheld.

“The incident occurred in the early morning hours in the municipality of Benito Juárez.

“Following this event, and in close coordination with the Interinstitutional Group, investigative efforts are being intensified to locate and apprehend the perpetrator(s) and bring them to justice.
