Cancun, Q.R. — Police are investigating the death of a person whose body was found among the mangroves of Laguna Manatí. The discovery was made in an area of weeds among the large mangrove area, located on the outskirts of Cancun.
The body was found by nearby area residents Friday. Forensic medical personnel detailed that the person, approximately 30, was found face down and in an advanced state of decomposition with gunshot wounds, however, they have since determined there were no gunshot wounds.
Due to the advancement in decomposition, authorities did not initially confirm if the body was that of a man or woman, however, an autopsy has determined the body is that of a woman.
The area was tapped off while evidence was collected and the body removed from the lagoon. Ministerial Police are investigating if she had been reported as a missing person. Authorities have since revealed that the woman was found bound and likely beaten to death.
An official identification has not yet been determined.
On February 2, the body of a man was also found in the same area. He was a bricklayer by trade. His deceased body was also found with gunshot wounds.
