Playa del Carmen police officer dismissed after videoed accepting bribe

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A Solidaridad police officer caught accepting a bribe from a driver was dismissed from his position Thursday.

The unnamed police officer was dismissed from his Playa del Carmen position after video circulated earlier this week showing him accepting a 200 peso bribe from a driver to avoid a traffic ticket. He was brought before fellow officers and stripped of his hat, gear and title.

Jorge Robles, head of the Ministry of Public Security and Municipal Transit de Solidaridad, fired the officer Thursday stating the city’s strict policy of zero tolerance for corruption.

“From the beginning of the administration, municipal president Laura Beristain was clear in saying that there will be no tolerance for acts of corruption. As a human being I am not the one to judge the conscience of others, but as the head of this institution, I am obliged to eradicate and punish any undue act in the performance of their duties. Everyday we work to consolidate a complete and respectable institution,” Jorge Robles explained.
