Pair of armed youths in custody for threatening Cancun taxi driver before stealing cab

Cancun, Q.R. — Two armed youths who attempted to steal a taxi from its driver remain in jail. The pair were arrested Friday night in SM 255 after the owner of the cab was able to flag down a passing police unit for help.

The unnamed taxi driver told police that two armed men had made off with his vehicle, which he gave up after being threatened with a knife.

Police quickly located the stolen Cancun taxi which resulted in a chase since the driver refused to stop. Cancun officers finally made their arrest in SM 90.

At the time of their arrests, they were both found armed. One was carrying a long knife and the other, an imitation handgun.

In a statement, Cancun Police said 19 year old Jimmy “N” and 23 year old Ernesto “N” were arrested by authorities during the search operation.

“The timely response of security authorities, as part of Operation Cancun Shield involving National Guard, the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) and the Cancun Police, led to the arrest of two men allegedly involved in a vehicle theft,” Policia Cancun reported.

“During prevention and surveillance operations in Superblock 225, police officers were approached by a citizen who requested assistance, stating that moments earlier his Chevrolet Beat, a taxi, had been stolen and that he had been threatened with a knife.

“The victim pointed to a car a few meters ahead, indicating that it was the vehicle in which the alleged perpetrators were fleeing.

“The officers immediately signaled the occupants of the indicated vehicle to stop, however, they ignored the order, leading to a chase that ended in Superblock 90, where they were finally apprehended and identified by the victim.

“During the subsequent search, a knife and a black plastic object resembling a firearm were seized from the suspects. Therefore, Jimmy “N”, 19 years old, and Ernesto “N”, 23 years old, were arrested and turned over to the State Attorney General’s Office for legal proceedings related to their alleged involvement in the crime of vehicle theft.”
