Cancun, Q.R. — One person was killed and six left injured in a two-vehicle crash outside Cancun. On Saturday, a highway collision killed one person after a passenger van and SUV crashed head on.
The 6:00 p.m. accident was reported to authorities a few kilometers south of Cancun along the federal highway. Witnesses told police that the driver of a Blazer SUV that was heading toward Cancun invaded the oncoming lane.
That invasion caused the crash between the Blazer and an oncoming tourist transportation van. Police and elements of the National Guard were sent to the scene. Members of the Cancun fire department were called in to free two people trapped by twisted metal.
On site, medical personnel attended to the wounded before transporting them to hospital. One person, who was reported to be a tourist, was killed in the accident.
Highway traffic was affected for more than two hours while authorities dealt with the situation.
