One dead, one policewoman injured in Cancun shooting

Cancun, Q.R. — One person has been killed and another injured during a shooting that involved Cancun police.

The shootings happened in SM 50 of Cancun Thursday evening around 8:30 when gunfire between armed subjects and police was exchanged on Chilam Balam Avenue. During the bullet exchange, one of the suspects was shot and killed. A Cancun policewoman was also hit.

On social media, Quintana Roo Police Chief Alberto Capella confirmed the incident and shooting of the female officer. Hermelinda G.V., the injured policewoman, was shot in the leg and taken to hospital. Police say one person was arrested. They also seized several firearms from the scene.

Reports say police were responding to the call of a neighborhood confrontation between groups. When they arrived, those involved in the confrontation opened fire against police.
