No injuries: Firemen deal with small fire inside central Cancun grocery store

Cancun, Q.R. — A grocery store in central Cancun was evacuated Monday evening due to a fire. City officials said the fire started in the ceiling of the clothing section of the store and was quickly brought under control.

City firemen and Civil Protection were at the Chedraui branch on Kabah Avenue yesterday evening in response to reports. According to early information, it was shoppers who noticed the white smoke that quickly filled the area. The source of the smoke was located the roof of the store.

Store staff called the fire department who arrived with other city officials and evacuated the store of both shoppers and employees. Cancun firemen said there were no injuries reported during the incident.

An official cause for the fire has not been made public. In a briefing, Protección Civil Cancún said “we responded immediately, in coordination with the Cancún Fire Department, to a small fire at a supermarket on Av. Kabah.

“The incident occurred in the clothing section, so customers and staff were evacuated as a precaution to avoid any risk.

“Thanks to the rapid response of our emergency teams, the fire was brought under control and no injuries were reported. At Cancún Civil Protection, we continue working 24/7 to ensure the safety of everyone.”
