Cancun, Q.R. — The City of Cancun reports nearly 50,000 participated in public events to celebrate Hanal Pixán. In a statement, the city reported 49,500 people celebrated the three main events which ran from October 29 to November 02.
Cancun mayor Ana Patricia Peralta highlighted the importance of the “Festival of the Faithfully Departed” celebration to strengthen the identity of Cancun.
“I am very happy to see so many happy people enjoying Hanal Pixán. This is a permanent event where everyone enjoys the altars for the dead, the food, which is very rich and recognized around the world, and the traditional catrinas,” she said.
The celebration was held at Malecón Tajamar in Cancun and consisted of a rich cultural program, Guignol theater, mariachi, dances, the exhibition of altars, sale of snacks and handicrafts and a procession of catrinas.
The five-day celebration also included the Parade of the Souls along Tulum Avenue as well as an artistic program on the main stage of the Parque de las Palapas.
Attendance figures for other municipalities were not provided, however, the Secretary of Tourism Bernardo Cueto Riestra, reported that around 406,000 tourists were expected in the state during the celebrations.
