More than 25 million international tourists visit Mexico in first five months

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — In the first five months of this year, Mexico has welcomed more than 25 million international visitors, an increase of 25.9 percent over the previous year.

Figures provided by the Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués, show more than 25.4 million international travelers into the country between January and May of 2022.

He said those numbers are only 37.2 percent away from reaching the number of international tourists captured in the same period of 2019, which he pointed out, was 40.5 million.

He says tourism spending captured during that time is up 114.7 percent from 2021 and an increase of 25.2 percent over the same period in 2019.

His figures also show more than 21.4 million traveled on domestic flights, an increase of 39.4 percent over that same period in 2021 and 1.8 percent in 2019.

The Mexican airlines with the most domestic flights were Volaris and Viva Aerobus. Together they transported 15,610 thousand passengers, 48.9 percent more than in 2021 and 47.7 percent of 2019.

Volaris, Viva Aerobus, Aeroméxico and Aeromar were the airlines with the highest passenger arrivals on domestic flights during January to May of 2022, representing 8.4 percent of the entire market.

On international flights, 14.60million passengers were recorded, 35.7 percent more than in the same period of 2021, but 19.4 percent less than the 18.2 million tourist figures capture in 2019.
