Merida to Cancun travelers detoured due to overturned trailer

Cancun, Q.R. — Weekend traffic along a section of highway that leads to Cancun was interrupted after a trailer landed on its side. The overturned trailer blocked both lanes and then some on the stretch of Merida to Cancun road.

Traffic was completely blocked for just over five hours while authorities dealt with the situation. The trailer overturned on a section of the Merida-Cancun toll road. The 42-year-old driver was transporting a shipment of goods bound for a supermarket chain in Cancun at the time of the accident.

It was around 6:00 a.m. Saturday when motorists began making calls to authorities about the blocked roadway. The driver, who was uninjured, reported losing control for a moment, leaving the pavement. When he tried to correct it, the unit overturned.

Traffic in both directions was stalled since the trailer landed on its side, completely blocking both lanes. Drivers turned around and opted to use one of the free roads while authorities removed the overturned trailer. The road was officially reopened just before noon.
