Judge hands down 20 year sentence in domestic violence murder case

Cancun, Q.R. — A Cancun man has been sentenced to 20 years for the strangulation murder of his girlfriend. Police say Ricardo Rogelio Robles Anzures was found guilty Monday and handed down the sentence during an oral trial.

Police reported that the murder happened in August of 2022 and was the result of domestic violence. After killing his girlfriend, he covered her with a blanket and left her in their shared house.

“The events for which the accused will spend two decades in prison occurred in the early morning of August 9, 2022, at the home located in Supermanzana 252 where he lived with the victim, who was his romantic partner,” they said in a statement.

“As a result of situations of domestic violence, due to economic issues, the now sentenced man physically assaulted the victim repeatedly, until he took her life by strangling her.

“Subsequently, Ricardo Rogelio Robles Anzures covered the lifeless body with a blanket and pillows, leaving it in the house.

“In addition to the prison sentence, the Judge imposed a fine of 115,464 pesos, as well as the payment of 802,516 pesos for material and moral damages.”
