Cancun, Q.R. — A block fire in Cancun has left several families homeless and three businesses unable to operate after neighbors reported flames.
The fire occurred in SM 66 of Cancun around noon after a palapa was seen on fire, consuming four homes and three small businesses. Firefighters, police, the Red Cross and municipality Civil Protection arrived after receiving the report of the fire. A majority of the block was evacuated by authorities for safety purposes.
Four homes were gutted by flame and smoke damage, while a nearby laundry service, was also damaged. Two other small businesses, located within the damaged homes, were also reported.
So far, it is unknown what caused the fire or exactly where it started, however, one comment estimated that the fire may have been caused by a short circuit inside the laundry mat.
Three people were treated on site for smoke inhalation. Neighbors say the smoke from the five-building blaze was felt in the neighboring regions of SM 73 and 91.
