Guatemalan detained for driving Cancun SUV with stolen plates

Cancun, Q.R. — A Guatemalan man was jailed over the weekend for driving a vehicle with stolen plates. On Friday, Cancun police patrolling the suburb town of Alfredo V. Bonfil ran plates of an SUV that came back registered to a car.

According to a report by the SSC (Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana) of Quintana Roo, “Erick Maudiel “N”, originally from Guatemala, was arrested for his probable participation in crimes against vehicle traffic safety.”

“The events were recorded when police elements were carrying out crime prevention, surveillance and assistance to citizens on Francisco I. Madero Street in the town of Alfredo V. Bonfil where they observed a Honda CRV traveling at excess speed, so they to stopped it.”

“Upon noticing the presence of the unit, the driver took an evasive attitude and tried to quickly flee. They proceeded to catch up with him to request an inspection of him as well as the vehicle.”

“During said inspection, no illicit object was found on the citizen, however, when verifying the data of the unit with the C5 Complex of Cancun, police learned that the UTS-604-L license plate that the SUV was transporting corresponded to a Volkswagen Jetta type vehicle.”

The driver was arrested and placed at the disposal of the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Quintana Roo.
