Cancun, Q.R. — A ground search for a Cancun swimmer reported missing Monday has taken flight. Local authorities have begun their recovery search from the air after the man was reported missing from Playa San Miguelito.
While some ground crews continue to search for the missing man, a state helicopter has been recruited to increase efforts from the air.
“At this time, a search and rescue operation is being carried out in the Águila II, a helicopter of the Secretariat of Citizen Security, in coordination with the Secretariat of the Navy (SEMAR), Civil Protection and Firefighters,” the Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana (SSC) reported.
“The person is a missing male who entered the sea on San Miguelito beach at Km 13.5 of the Hotel Zone. The tours remain in the beach area and maritime area,” the SSC added Monday afternoon.
The man is reported to have gone swimming around 6:00 a.m. Monday morning off the Cancun Hotel Zone beach. The man was reported missing after he failed to return from his morning swim.
Municipal and Tourist Police were first responders after the 9-1-1 call was made reporting the missing swimmer. After taking a statement from friends and family, police requested assistance from Civil Protection and the Navy to begin a search operation.
Cancun authorities have not provided any specifics surrounding the missing person. The age of the man is not known, nor is it known if he is a resident or a tourist.
