Greenpeace activists tie themselves to tree clearing machinery in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Eight Greenpeace activists tied themselves to machinery being used to clear trees in a section of Playa del Carmen. The trees are being cleared to make way for Maya Train tracks.

The activists demanded the immediate suspension of the clearing work being done, mentioning the jungle and water in the underground cenotes.

“We demand the immediate suspension of this section! For the jungle, the water and the cenotes, join us!” they posted on social media.

The group were protesting the section 5 south line that is being cleared to make way for train tracks. Trees are being removed from an area in the far west of the city after plans to run it through the city center changed.

Other environmental groups reported police arriving and detaining them, however, there was no report from officials.
