Flash LP gas dryer explosion leaves man with third degree burns

Cancun, Q.R. — An apartment resident was transferred to hospital in serious condition from an LP gas explosion. The explosion happened inside his laundry room due to a line leak that left him with third degree burns.

According to the Cancun Fire Department, the accident happened Monday afternoon on the third level of an apartment building. An accumulation of gas due to a line leak in the laundry room ignited, blowing out windows and leaving the man with severe burns to the upper part of his body.

The explosion happened in the Aloha subdivision in SM 246 that caused damage to a neighboring apartment building.

In the incident report, the Cancun Fire Department said on Monday afternoon, “members of the Cancun Fire Department responded to an emergency report received through the C5 system regarding a gas leak in a third-floor apartment.

A leak in a gas line caused the explosion.

“Our personnel arrived at the scene to immediately secure the area, shutting off the gas valves and cutting off the electrical supply to eliminate any further risks.

“Pre-hospital care was provided by Cancun Civil Protection and ERUM (Emergency Medical Response Unit) personnel to a male individual who sustained burn injuries while operating a gas-powered dryer.

“In coordination with paramedics, the patient was safely lowered to the ground for immediate transport to the hospital. Finally, preventative measures were taken, including removing damaged window glass for the safety of residents and neighbors.

“Gas accumulation is silent and dangerous. To prevent accidents at home, we recommend: Regularly check the hoses, connections, and regulators of your washing machines, dryers and stoves.

“Always ventilate areas where you use gas (utility areas or kitchens). If you smell gas, do not turn on lights or electrical appliances and call 911 immediately. To Serve and Protect!”
