Five Tulum officers sent to investigate robbery fired after videoed stealing

Tulum, Q.R. — Five agents of the Municipal Police in Tulum were discharged after being caught on video stealing bottles of liquor from a supermarket. The incident was recorded when the unknowing officers went to the store to investigate a robbery.

Nésguer Vicencio Méndez, the director of Public Security, confirmed their dismissal explaining that the five unnamed officers were investigating the report of a robbery after thieves allegedly entered the store via a hole made in the wall. While police were on site, store video surveillance caught all five officers helping themselves to bottles of alcohol.

Vicencio Méndez says the officers did not realize they were being recorded. Once the video was seen, the five were dismissed from their positions. “I spoke with the police officers. It is the president’s instructions not to tolerate acts of corruption and abuse and he stands firm against elements that are involved in these types of acts,” he declared.
