Firemen on scene after plumes of smoke reported from Cancun store rooftop

Cancun, Q.R. —  Cancun firemen had their hands full dealing with a roof fire on a busy department store during opening hours Thursday. City firemen were requested at a Coppel store on Nichupte Avenue after thick smoke began to rise from the roof.

Shoppers and employees were quickly evacuated from the building as thick smoke filled the air for several city blocks. Large plumes of smoke continued to emanate from the building’s rooftop as firemen worked to extinguish its source.

In a brief social media post, the City of Cancun said “Police and emergency bodies attend a fire that broke out in the Coppel store on Nichupte Avenue. No injured people are reported, only material damage.”

Regardless, medical personnel were on hand as firemen put out the source of the smoke. There has not been any final determination as to the cause.
