Firemen and Civil Protection personnel fight large brush fire outside Cancun

Cancun, Q.R. — A large brush fire behind the Cancun airport is officially declared out. Firemen worked to extinguish the fire that was reported started Wednesday.

Authorities were made aware of the fire by motorists who saw plumes of white smoke coming from at least two burning areas.

The fire started along the Cancun to Merida stretch of highway March 11, 2026.

Cancun firemen found a large section of wild vegetation on fire west of the city along the Cancun to Merida highway.

More than a dozen emergency services personnel from the Cancun fire department and Civil Protection attended to the fire. Firefighters worked for several hours to contain and extinguish the fire.

Authorities are asking the public to be vigilant about what they toss out their windows.

“Attention to vegetation fire on road. Elements of the Cancún Fire Department in coordination with Cancún Civil Protection worked to extinguish a vegetation fire on the side of the Cancún – Mérida highway,” Bomberos Cancun reported.

“With increasing temperatures and dry conditions, forest fires have begun to occur, many of them caused by human carelessness.

“We call on citizens:
Do not throw cigarette butts on the road.
Do not throw garbage or bottles that could generate a magnifying glass effect.
Avoid lighting fires in natural areas.

“Small actions can cause large fires that put the lives, the environment and the safety of those who pass through these areas at risk. Prevention is everyone’s task. In the event of any emergency, report immediately to the official number 911.”

It was the third wild grass fire in the northern part of the state ahead off the official start of forest fire season.
