Female motorcycle passenger killed by van while avoiding Cancun tricycle driver

Cancun, Q.R. — A Cancun woman was killed Monday night after being hit by a van while trying to avoid a bicycle. The accident happened on the Auto Gas highway around 9:00 p.m. The woman was riding as a passenger when the driver came upon a man on a work tricycle crossing in his path.

In an attempt to avoid hitting him, he entered the oncoming lane but hit the tricycle’s planks in the process, skidding his bike. Both people from the motorcycle fell to the pavement. At that moment, the female motorcycle passenger was hit by an oncoming van in the opposite lane.

The woman died. The motorcycle she was on was found lying a few meters away. The male driver of the motorcycle was not seriously injured. The man on the tricycle fled the scene. Several drivers stopped and requested medical assistance. Traffic in both directions was closed while authorities cleared the road.

According to the Municipal Traffic Department, the driver of the tricycle was traveling east to west on a dirt road. While attempting to join the main road, he invaded the path of the motorcycle which was traveling south to north.

The motorcycle, upon impacting against the planks protruding from the tricycle, skidded violently. The driver and his passenger fell to the ground. It was at that moment that a white Urvan, traveling in the opposite direction (north to south), struck the woman on the road, killing her instantly.
