Emergency personnel pull drowning tourist from Cancun water while practicing rescue drills on beach

Cancun, Q.R. — Lifeguards and Red Cross members put their skills into action after pulling a drowning tourist from the sea while participating in practice rescue drills on a Cancun beach.

The unusual incident happened Monday while rescue and medical personnel were practicing rescue drills at Playa Delfines in the Cancun Hotel Zone. During their drills, they noticed a man struggling in the water.

Rushing out, the group managed to pull the Guadalajara tourist from the sea and onto shore where he was given medical attention. The man was rescued after ignoring red flag beach warnings about the strong current. He entered the sea and was pulled out into deep water, unable to get back to shore.

Members of Civil Protection, the Red Cross and Cancun lifeguards were at Playa Delfines participating in a National Civil Protection Day drill when the incident occurred.
