Cancun, Q.R. — A 65-year-old woman lost her life in the vicinity of Playa Langosta in the Cancun Hotel Zone from drowning.
The accident occurred around 6:20 p.m. when the female swimmer entered the sea, walking out a fair distance when she began to be swept away by strong currents. Witnesses alerted lifeguards who immediately entered the water to return the elderly woman to shore.
By the time lifeguards reached her, she was already unconscious. She was returned to shore, but without vital signs.
The deceased has been identified as 65-year-old Julia R.R. from Veracruz. Reports say she failed to stay close to shore, not abiding by the warning flags placed in the sand by lifeguards indicating the strong off-shore currents.
