Early morning single vehicle crash leaves two dead in Cancun

Cancun, Q.R. — Two people were killed Saturday morning after crashing their SUV into a city power pole. Cancun police were at the scene of the single vehicle crash at the intersection of Kabah and López Portillo Avenues in response to emergency reports.

According to witnesses, the red Nissan Xterra was traveling at excessive speed when the driver lost control and slammed into a concrete power pole. Red Cross paramedics pronounced both the driver and front seat passenger dead at the 6:30 a.m. scene.

Emergency crews, including Cancun Transit, were called in. According to initial reports, the driver climbed onto the center median and crashed into the base of a concrete utility pole, ending up in the opposite lane. Both people inside were killed.

The area was cordoned off while the bodies were removed from inside the wrecked vehicle, which was found close to a set of high voltage cables that had collapsed from the impact. Cancun firemen were brought in to assist.
