Cancun, Q.R. — A young teen died Sunday afternoon after the car he was riding in was involved in a two vehicle accident. Cancun Transit arrived at the scene around 4:00 p.m. after reports of the crash in Arco Norte.
An old model compact car was found heavily damaged in a green area after colliding with a bus. According to witnesses, the car and bus collided when the driver of the bus attempted to merge into another lane and the driver of the car was unable to avoid hitting the heavy unit.
The small car ended up rolling at least once before coming to a rest right-side-up. During the roll over, a young teen from inside was thrown from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
The driver of the compact car is alleged to have fled the scene before police arrived. Witnesses accused the male driver of the car of being under the influence of alcohol. Police have not been able to confirm those accusations.
The driver of the bus was taken into custody by police at the scene. Both lanes were shut while authorities worked due to the severity of the accident.
