Cancun, Q.R. — A pedestrian was killed along Cancun’s busy Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard after being struck by a vehicle. The accident happened near Plaza Cumbres from where witnesses said the responsible vehicle kept going.
Initial reports indicate that the male pedestrian attempted to cross the boulevard from a gas station around 6:15 p.m. As he ran toward the median, he was struck.
The man is reported to have been a local worker trying to catch a city bus at a stop on the other side of the boulevard.
Witnesses reported seeing a speeding vehicle hit the man and keep going. Witness accounts say the vehicle threw the pedestrian in front of it before running him over.
Cancun Transit closed a section of the boulevard and diverted traffic to the side lanes leading to Plaza Cumbres. Paramedics confirmed the man died at the scene.
Traffic was slowed to a crawl for over two hours as emergency services worked the scene and removed the body. According to city planning, there is a pedestrian footbridge several meters from where the accident happened.
City police are using surveillance cameras to locate the vehicle involved.
