Cancun, Q.R. — The driver of an SUV alleged responsible for a deadly early morning Cancun accident is being sought. City surveillance cameras captured the male driver fleeing the scene shortly after 5:30 a.m. Left behind was one dead and at least six injured.
According to early information, the driver of the involved SUV ran a red light, crashing into a passenger bus. The bus was traveling in the opposite direction, heading toward central Cancun when it was hit.
The large bus dragged the SUV for several meters before coming to a stop. Emergency services were called to the scene around 5:40 a.m. along José López Portillo Avenue.
Police arrived to find the SUV door left open by the fleeing driver. Red Cross paramedics located a male passenger in the front seat of the SUV. He was pronounced dead at the scene. At least six passengers from the ADO bus were taken to hospital with various minor injuries.
Rescue and Medical Emergency Squad (ERUM), and the fire department with urban rescue equipment, were brought in to remove the trapped body of the SUV front seat passenger. The driver of the bus was taken in for questioning.
The accident left early morning traffic slowed for several hours while emergency services cleared the scene.
