Dozens evacuated from Cancun hotel during restaurant palapa fire

Cancun, Q.R. — More than 60 people were evacuated from a Cancun hotel Friday when a palapa began to burn. Smoke that began to rise from the top of the hotel’s grass-topped restaurant quickly turned into flames.

Cancun firemen rushed to the scene along with Civil Protection personnel who reported evacuating 30 hotel guests and 31 employees.

Civil Protection Cancun reported the fire at the Casa Maya Hotel in the Cancun Hotel Zone. The fire began around 1:30 p.m. which lead to the quick evacuation of the hotel.

Protección Civil Cancún confirmed “a palapa fire in the Casa Maya Hotel restaurant” and that “61 people, 31 employees and 30 visitors” were evacuated. The municipal agency also reported “no injuries” adding that the situation was quickly under control.

Cancun firemen and personnel from Civil Protection will revisit the site to begin an investigation into the cause of the fire.
