Cancun, Q.R. — The occupant of a rented room was rushed to Cancun hospital Wednesday after an LP gas explosion. The unidentified man suffered serious burns when his cylinder gas tank exploded.
Cancun police and firemen were at the home on Argentina Street in the El Milagro neighborhood. The explosion happened in a tenement building, injuring only one man of the six rooms rented.
The owner of the property reported the incident to 9-1-1. According to available information, the tenant owed several months of back rent. After being asked to leave during a morning dispute with the homeowner, other tenants claimed the man intentionally opened the gas line inside the apartment to cause the explosion.
The explosion caused serious structural damage to the building. Civil Protection and the fire department arrived to assess the structural condition while agents from the Secretariat of Citizen Security began an investigation.
The man responsible for the explosion fled on foot, but was found hours later in the El México neighborhood suffering from severe burns on the front of his arms and legs. A private ambulance took him to the Jesús Kumate Rodríguez General Hospital, where he remains hospitalized under police guard.
