Deputy Director of Cancun Preventative Police suspended after scandalous accident

Cancun, Q.R. — Cancun authorities have announced the suspension of the Deputy Director of Preventive Police. Deputy Director Juan Manuel Velázquez Robledo was suspended after he was involved in a car accident Sunday morning.

The accident was reported to municipal authorities early Sunday after the driver left a bar parking lot and slammed into a city streetlight. The driver then fled the scene.

Cancun Transit officers responding to the accident report located the abaondoned car in the middle the street. Officers used city surveillance to track down the driver.

Video footage showed the vehicle speeding out of a bar parking lot in Plaza de Toros off Bonampak Avenue. Not long after, the driver is seen colliding with the median before crashing into a city streetlight. From there, he got out of the car and fled the scene.

Velázquez Robledo is also being investigated for his participation in an alleged fight that happened inside a bar at Plaza de Torres as well as allegations of driving while intoxicated.

In a statement, the Secretaría Municipal de Seguridad Ciudadana y Tránsito de Benito Juárez (SMSCyT) reported “the suspension of the Deputy Director of the Preventive Police, Juan Manuel Velázquez Robledo “Géminis”, after allegedly being involved in an incident inside an establishment and a traffic accident. The events are being investigated under a zero tolerance policy for corruption and abuse.”

In a separate statement, Cancun Mayor Ana Paty Peralta said “Cancun residents, corruption and abuse of authority have no place in our corporation. The Code of Ethics is clear: we have zero tolerance for these actions.

“We will not allow individual behavior to affect the prestige or commitment of those who, with integrity, carry out their work in the service of our community. Without exception and without privileges, no one is above the law.”
