Colombian loan shark group shut down in 3 Cancun neighborhoods

Cancun, Q.R. — A group of Colombians remain in police custody after Cancun authorities busted up a drug and loan shark operation. A total of 17 people were arrested in the three operation raid. Of those, 15 are from Colombia.

Elements from the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSyPC) carried out three search warrants where they found alleged narcotics. The 14 men and three women were arrested during the three Friday night property searches.

Police seized drugs and 16 motorcycles during a search in the Gran Santa Fe III subdivision in SM 323 of Cancun. During the other two searches in SM 95 and SM 517, numerous quantities of narcotics were found.

“Initial investigations indicate that these individuals, in addition to independently selling drugs, offer cash loans known as “drop by drop” (gota a gota) whose modus operandi is to lend money and collect, under threats, every day,” Cancun police reported.
