City of Cancun prepares to protect sea turtle pens as the Atlantic hurricane season picks up

Cancun, Q.R. — As the Atlantic hurricane season picks up, the city of Cancun has begun a program to move sea turtle eggs into protective pens. The large designated areas are two turtle camps located in Playa Delfines and Playa Marlín.

Sandbags were placed along the pens by officials to help protect the eggs in the event of a passing storm. Hotels with designated nesting areas are also being asked to use sandbags to protect their turtle sites.

So far, at least 54 sea turtle pens have been readied in the event of a tropical storm or hurricane.
