Cancun, Q.R. — The city of Cancun has made its first ever arrest for illegal garbage dumping. The arrest of the driver and seizure of his vehicle happened Wednesday in an area near Rancho Viejo.
The unidentified dump truck driver was caught unloading discarded construction material from his vehicle into the trees. Police surprised the driver with their sudden appearance.
Elements of the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Traffic were tipped off by a citizen who reported the illegal dumping. When police arrived, they found the driver tossing a dump truck load of “solid waste” into the trees.
The man was taken into police custody and will be fined. His dump truck was towed to the police coral.
Earlier this year, Cancun City Hall announced that tougher measures would be applied to people found dumping in clandestine garbage dumps.
