Citizen complaint leads to Cancun Hotel Zone drug bust

Cancun, Q.R. — A citizen complaint of drug sales has lead to a large bust in the Cancun Hotel Zone. Seven people who fled at the sight of approaching officers were captured for narcotic sales outside a hotel at Kilometer 14.

Elements of the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC), together with Agents of the Investigative Police, made the arrests Wednesday.

According to a news briefing by the Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana (SSC) de Quintana Roo, police “carried out investigative work in the surroundings of the hotel called “Now Emerald” in the beach area in the Hotel Zone of Cancun at Km 14 in response to a complaint for the sale of narcotics in that place,” they reported.

“During the tour, they observed a group of people gathered and wearing reflective vests similar to those worn by the workers who were working inside the Now Emerald.”

Police reported seeing them exchange bags of what appeared to marijuana for cash, which constitutes the sale of narcotics.

“Elements approached to carry out the corresponding inspection when at that moment, the seven people began to run in different directions to try to escape,” the SSC said.

They were intercepted and captured. During an inspection, authorities found hundreds of packages of drugs that ranged from marijuana to crack cocaine, powered cocaine and crystal meth.

The group were also found carrying backpacks which inside, contained drug paraphernalia, cash, notebooks and a mobile payment terminal.
