Cancun woman shot to death in broad daylight while riding city bus

Cancun, Q.R. — A woman reported to be in her mid-twenties was gunned down while inside a public bus Tuesday. The city bus had stopped to let passengers off and on when a man opened fire against a seated woman.

The targeted shooting happened when the bus driver stopped along Tulum Avenue in SM 5. At that moment, three shots were heard before a man ran from the bus. According to bus passengers, a woman was then seen falling from her seat onto the bus floor.

Paramedics pronounced the woman dead on scene. She has not been publicly identified.

Police cordoned off the area while shaken passengers were removed from the bus and forensic personnel began to collect evidence.

According to preliminary information, the woman was traveling on the bus with a man who, according to passengers, she was arguing with when he shot her then fled. She was shot several times in her front torso.

Since the Tuesday shooting, five suspects have been taken into custody. Elements from the Benito Juárez Municipal Secretary of Public Security and Traffic have reportedly taken five people into custody believed related to the woman’s murder.

The State Attorney General has reported an investigation has begun into the woman’s murder. On social media, the state agency posted “The FGE Quintana Roo has started an investigation after five people were made available to the Public Ministry for their possible participation in a homicide, which occurred on public roads, against a female person in the municipality of Benito Juárez.”
