Cancun will appeal PPA fine for landfill mismanagement

Cancun, Q. R. — Cancun City Council will appeal a 1.2 million peso fine issued to the city by the Environmental Protection Attorney’s Office (PPA). The fine was issued last week for the July mismanagement of its previous landfill.

Cancun Mayor Ana Patricia Peralta said in addition to appealing the fine, the city intends to make a claim for reimbursement for the extraordinary expenses the city has incurred so far.

She said the City of Cancun will fight to have the at-the-time landfill management company Promotora Inmobiliaria Mahahual (Pimsa), absorb those expenses.

“A review appeal is going to be presented. All these expenses that we have due to the mismanagement of the concession will be fought to assume the lowest possible cost since it was the mismanagement of the concession that caused this,” she said.

Late last week, the City of Cancun was fined 1.2 million pesos after Protección al Ambiente (PPA) investigated allegations of leaching contamination due to garbage mismanagement.

At the same time, the company in charge of the landfill at the time, Pimsa, was fined 5.3 million pesos after the PPA reported 45 irregularities in the operation of the landfill.

Both have 30 days to pay or appeal.
