Cancun scraps garbage concession due to breach of contract

Cancún, Q.R. — Due to breach of contract, Cancun city council has cut ties with its concessioned garbage collection company. The announcement was made by the city who reported the unanimous vote for the temporary intervention of the concession granted to the garbage collection company Inteligencia México SA de CV.

The city’s council recognizes the environmental emergency situation generated by the accumulation of waste and has said it will utilize the decentralized public body Siresol Cancun for the collection and transportation of solid and urban waste.

In a public statement, the city of Cancun said the resolution is derived from the problem of non-compliance, deficiency and suspension of work regarding the city’s garbage collection.

In October, the city intervened with city council officials collecting the garbage themselves in hopes the concessioned company would be able to get its internal affairs in order.

The Secretary General of the City Council, Flor Ruiz Cosío said that with this new resolution, the municipality will take all the necessary measures to guarantee garbage collection.
