Cancun police shoot suspect during arrest after attacking officer

Cancun, Q.R. — Two men are under investigation for armed robbery and one, the attempted murder of a city police officer. Eliseo “N” and Lázaro “N”, are both being investigated for robbing 11 passengers on a public transport unit in Cancun Friday.

Lázaro “N” is being investigated separetly for the attempted murder of a female police officer as well as damages and resisting arrest. The charges stem from an incident that happened Friday afternoon in Cancun.

Cancun police say Lázaro “N” boarded the public transport unit at the intersection of Tulum and López Portillo Avenues and later asked the bus to stop at Arco de Piedra along the highway where Eliseo “N” was waiting.

Once on board, Eliseo “N” threatened the driver with a firearm while Lázaro “N” robbed the passengers. After the robbery, the pair ordered the driver to let them off where they had a motorcycle waiting.

They were seen fleeing on the bike toward Cancun. After being made aware of the robbery through 9-1-1 by passengers, police followed their trail on city surveillance cameras.

“Upon establishing their location at the intersection of Nichupté and López Portillo Avenues in the El Pedregal neighborhood, municipal police officers stopped them, however, in an attempt to evade the officers, Lázaro “N” grabbed a female police officer by the neck and threatened to kill her.

“In this situation, the other police officer shot him, resulting in gunshot wounds to the right femur and left ankle. He was taken to hospital where he remains in custody, while Eliseo “N” was taken into custody.” During the arrest police seized two gun, six cell phones and the motorcycle.

The female police officer was also hospitalized and is reported as stable.
