Cancun, Q.R. — The Cancun police officer gunned down early Sunday morning has been identified as Altamirano Olarte. Olarte was a prosecutor’s agent from the city’s narcotics division.

He was murdered Sunday morning in the parking lot of Plaza de Toros as he walked to his private vehicle. He was reported to be in the company of a woman when he was ambushed and shot by armed men.
Those responsible are reported to have fired off repeated shots, hitting him several times before fleeing. Responding police found him laying face up in the parking lot next to his car.
Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. He was off duty at the time of the shooting.

Responding officers implemented a search operation for the gunmen Sunday. Although no arrests have been reported so far, authorities are not ruling out that the attack was related to his work within the agency.
City security footage is being used to help identify those responsible.
